چکیده

We report on a uniform comparative analysis of the fundamental parameters of early–type galaxies at z∼1 down to MB ≤ −20, both in the field and in the clusters. The changes in the M/LB ratio from z∼1 to today are larger for lower mass galaxies in all environments, and are larger in the field than in the clusters for galaxies with the same mass. By deriving ages from the M/LB ratio, we estimate the formation redshift for early-type galaxies as a function of galaxy mass and environment. We find that (1) the age of early-type galaxies increases with galaxy mass (downsizing) in all environments, (2) cluster galaxies are older than field galaxies at any given galaxy mass, and (3) this age difference increases with galaxy mass. The first two results confirm similar ones obtained by other means, while the third one is new. The most recent incarnation of the hierarchical models of galaxy formation and evolution is capable of explaining the first two results, but predicts the opposite of our third result. We also find a total lack of massive early–type galaxies (M > 3 × 10M⊙) with a formation redshift smaller than 2, which cannot be due to selection effects. Subject headings: cosmology: observations — galaxies: elliptical and lenticular, cD — galaxies: evolution — galaxies: formation — galaxies: high redshift

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

Scaling relations in dynamical evolution of star clusters

We have carried out a series of small scale collisional N-body calculations of single-mass star clusters to investigate the dependence of the lifetime of star clusters on their initial parameters. Our models move through an external galaxy potential with a logarithmic density profile and they are limited by a cut-off radius. In order to find scaling relations between the lifetime of star cluste...

Evaluation of New MOND Interpolating Function with Rotation Curves of Galaxies

The rotation curves of a sample of 46 low- and high-surface brightness galaxies are considered in the context of Milgrom's modi_ed dynamics (MOND) to test a new interpolating function proposed by Zhao et al. (2010) [1] and compare with the results of simple interpolating function. The predicted rotation curves are calculated from the total baryonic matter based on the B-band surface photometry,...

The Effect of Environment on the Uv Color-magnitude Relation of Early-type Galaxies

We use GALEX (Galaxy Evolution Explorer) near-UV (NUV) photometry of a sample of earlytype galaxies selected in SDSS (Sloan Digital Sky Survey) to study the UV color-magnitude relation (CMR). NUV − r color is an excellent tracer of even small amounts (∼ 1% mass fraction) of recent (. 1 Gyr) star formation and so the NUV − r CMR allows us to study the effect of environment on the recent star for...

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
